Habitat for Humanity

Columbia is considering a partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia (along with other churches) to build nine (9) family units (condominiums) on Lee Highway (intersection of Routes 29 & 50) - June '08 through June '09. Multiple volunteers needed over the year as well as financial and in-kind resources. Let us know if, and how, you are interested. Call or email: Anne Tomas, email, 703-534-5740 x206, or David Rogers, email, 703-623-2887.

Post Office Food Drive a Great Success!

On May 10th Columbia’s Food Pantry received approximately 4,200 pounds of food items donated by the Falls Church Post Office during their annual food drive.  About 60 Columbians came to help deliver the food from the Post Office to the pantry, unload, sort, and shelve the many cans/boxes of food.  Columbia’s Missions and Evangelism Ministry appreciates your willingness to support this ministry which helped feed over 5,000 people in 2007.

What happens to the food that is provided to the Food Pantry?

  • FOOD PANTRY FACTS FOR 2007:
    • 1,425 families assisted,
    • 5,361 members in the families,
    • 6,369 bags distributed.

  • FOOD PANTRY FACTS FOR 2008 as of APRIL 19TH:
    • 542 families assisted,
    • 2,125 members in the families,
    • 2,415 bags distributed.

Because you have shared what God has given you, others are able to put food on their tables for their families and experience God's love as demonstrated by your gifts and the hands and hearts of faithful Columbia volunteers who serve at the pantry.

The Falls Church Memorial Day Festival

Columbia is again participating in the Memorial Day Festival on Monday May 26, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. This event, located just three blocks from Columbia, has always been a great opportunity to let the community know about Columbia. Volunteers are needed to help set-up and tear down the tent, greet people, and hand out bottled water or balloons. Look for the volunteer sign-up poster near the Information Desk. For more information, see the ministry wall or contact Michelle Tennison, email, or Scott Sweatman, email.

Compassion Weekend Results

A heart-felt THANK YOU to all those who responded to God's prompting to sponsor a child through Compassion International and made Compassion Weekend 2008 the most successful ever! We are happy to report that 33 children were sponsored by Columbia members, and as a result will receive monthly support for nutritious food, school fees, health care, and spiritual development. If you would like more information on how YOU can become a child sponsor, contact Dick Cornelius email or Anne Tomas email.

Metro Missions

Metro Missions gives the members of Columbia Baptist the opportunity to minister to people in the community through outside projects such as soup kitchens, Habitat for Humanity, coat collection for the homeless and many other ways. The opportunities are endless! The time commitments are generally designed to be one whole day or part of a day in and around our local Metro DC area.

Interested in joining us? Contact Michelle Tennison  email  for more information or to sign up.
